Do Today’s Work Instead of Imagining Your Something-Year Plan
Have you done your work for today?
No but have you done your real work for today?
Not running around being ‘busy’, not doing a bunch of research and planning all the work you’re going to do.
I’m talking about the real work. The solid and consistent steam rolling of your goals for the day. The tasks that make your day a successful day regardless of failure. The work that makes you sleep knowing within your heart that you seized the day and made it yours.
Too many people will get caught in the planning. They’ll get caught in the future. Sprinkle a little nostalgia from the past in there and ladies and gentlemen, we have a completely neglected present.
You’ll hear it time and time again. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Fulfilment doesn’t come from looking to the future at what you could be. It comes from being in the present, and periodically looking back to see where you came from.
Plan if it’s today’s work. Research if it’s today’s work. Don’t neglect today’s work for either if it’s not today’s work.
When you go to bed tonight, ask yourself what actions you took today. If you can’t think of solid actions, you unfortunately got caught in the Busy Work delusion.
No amount of ‘planning’ or being ‘busy’ will be a substitute for even 2 hours of real work.
So I’ll ask again,
Have you done your work for today?
