Following and unfollowing people on any social media platform will surely get you followers but that type of transactional behaviour will rarely result in an engaged audience.
I’d rather have a couple hundred engaged people who like my content and listen to what I have to say, than 3000 people who like and retweet anything to add to the cycle of vanity metrics and noise.
And I’m saying this from a place of love and understanding. I’ve been there too, I grew an audience on Instagram to 80,000 followers using those same short sited strategies, the content was ‘meh’ but the vanity metrics were strong. It was eventually dead in the water all because I didn’t cultivate an actual following of interested people.
