If You Feel Like You’re Not Making Progress, Make Sure You're Doing This 1 Thing Every Day
As humans we’re notorious for not looking at the big picture, not seeing ourselves, our lives or our goals with a holistic, broad view. What do I mean by that?
I mean we put in a ton of effort working towards our goals, but when the results don’t come fast enough we grow anxious, we worry that we’re doing something wrong or if the thing we’re doing is even worth it. This feeling grows overwhelmingly as the thing we’re doing gets harder and that initial traction and learning we gained seems minuscule.
Everything we’ve learned or done, starts looking really small as we try to imagine our trajectory or think about how far we’ve got to go. We have a bad habit of forgetting how far we’ve come. We’re impatient.
Rest assured, progress happens, whether you’re feeling it or not. All you have to do is realise that progress isn’t leaping from stone to stone making giant strides towards your goals — it’s inching.
It’s inching a little closer, every single day.
By actually working towards the goal, every single day.
If you feel like you’re not making progress simply ask yourself:
Have I worked towards my goal today?
The answer is simply yes or no.
I don’t care if you’re learning how to code and you only did 30 minutes of coding tutorials, followed by 23.5 hours of nothing. Today, you did something, meaning you inched a little closer to your goal. And if you do that every single day… You’re doing 3 and a half hours of Goal-Inching every week. 15 hours of working towards your goal every month!? That’s insane. Utterly insane that from a consistent 30 minute daily activity, you could have 15 hours of experience in a new skill, progression on a long term goal, or any number of activities within the month.
The point isn’t to make sure you’re performing some ominous secret strategy every day to make sure you’re progressing. The point is to make sure that you’re actually doing the work, no matter how big or small, every single day.
This work you do stacks up. If you think 5-10 minutes of meditation a day is insignificant and might as well be the equivalent of no meditation at all, you’ll undoubtedly be surprised.
Something is better than nothing. And a particular ‘something’ that’s done consistently makes all the difference. So if you’re feeling like you’re not progressing, do your thing every day, move the needle an inch consistently, and know that you’ve done your part today. Then get ready to do it again tomorrow.
